British MP Bruce George to lead OSCE Observation of Ukrainian Elections

COPENHAGEN, 20 March 2002 - The Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) Bruce George, MP (United Kingdom) will lead the OSCE Observers for the Parliamentary Elections in Ukraine on Sunday, 31 March. Bruce George will act as Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama, leading the Mission and delivering the preliminary post-election statement on Monday, 1 April.
The OSCE parliamentary observer team so far includes 50 representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The Observation Mission is a joint effort of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the OSCE PA. The Mission will assess the conduct of the elections, the political campaign and the role of the media. Long-term observers have already been deployed for several weeks across the country.
