OSCE/ODIHR sends Election Observation Mission to Hungary
BUDAPEST 13 March 2002
BUDAPEST, 13 March 2002 -Following an invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Janos Martonyi, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has established an Election Observation Mission in Hungary to monitor the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for 7 April.
Headed by Linda Edgeworth (U.S.), the Mission consists of nine election experts and long-term observers from eight OSCE participating States. In addition to a head office in Budapest, teams will also be based in Pecs and Debrecen.
The Mission will assess the election process in terms of its compliance with international standards for democratic elections and national legislation. It will focus on all aspects of the election process, including the registration of candidates and lists, the campaign and media, pre-election preparations of electoral bodies and local authorities, the participation of national minorities and women, and election- related disputes resolution processes.
The OSCE/ODIHR will issue a comprehensive report about a month after the completion of the election process.
