Human rights record of OSCE States under review in Warsaw

WARSAW, 11 November 1997 - The Foreign Minister of Poland, Bronislaw Geremek will open the biannual OSCE Implementation Meeting tomorrow in Warsaw. The three-week meeting of delegations from 54 OSCE States, other international organizations and over 65 non-governmental organizations provides the opportunity to review compliance with OSCE commitments in the so-called "human dimension." Issues addressed will include freedom of religion; freedom of media; freedom of association; prevention of torture; tolerance; migration and national minorities as well as the situation of Roma (Gypsies).
The meeting, organized by the OSCE's Warsaw-based Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, will also review the effectiveness of the OSCE in these areas.
The meeting will take place in the Conference Center of the Ministry of Defence (MON), Zwirki i Wigury 9/13. The opening plenary session at 15.00 on 12 November is open to the press. The list of participants, as well as a schedule of meetings, is available at the ODIHR by request.
