ONLINE EVENT: Protecting and Promoting the Rights of Undocumented Migrants and Asylum Seekers in Times of Crisis

Undocumented migrants and asylum seekers are among those most vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to curb the spread of the virus, it is necessary to put in place health and social measures which cater for the entire population. Undocumented migrants and asylum seekers often face restrictions or difficulties in accessing basic services, including healthcare, housing and social protection, which puts them at further risks in situations of crisis, such as the one we are currently experiencing. Further, the legal status of migrants and asylum seekers may negatively impact their ability to access services, support themselves and their families, and result in deportation procedures being initiated when they come in contact with authorities and service providers.
The aim of the event is to discuss positive responses to ensure access to services for these groups across the OSCE region, as well as good practices in maintaining and regularizing their legal status. It will also identify areas of concern where such measures could inspire positive change.
Speakers will include:
Felipe González Morales, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Migrants
Michele Levoy, Director, Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants
Eleni Takou, Deputy Director, Human Rights 360, Greece
Niel Bruton, Campaign Development Worker, Migrant Rights Centre Ireland
Cristina Gatões, National Director, the Immigration and Borders Service of Portugal
Davor Sopf, Senior Regional Protection Officer, the UNHCR Regional Office South Eastern Europe
The presentations and discussions will inform ODIHR’s work to support OSCE participating States in protecting and promoting the human rights of migrants.
