Conflict resolution, democratization and human rights among top priorities of OSCE Mission to Moldova, says new Head
Conflict resolution and promoting democratization and respect for human rights on the both banks of the Dniestr/Nistru river are top priorities of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, said the new Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ambassador Jennifer Brush.
Brush, who outlined her priorities following her appointment in May 2012, said political changes on both sides of the Dniestr/Nistru have brought new opportunities for progress in the Mission’s mandated task to facilitate a lasting, comprehensive political settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict.
Emphasizing that the negotiations agenda seeks to improve people’s lives by solving issues related to freedom of movement, communications and public health, Brush welcomed the sides’ commitment to re-open the bridge connecting the villages of Gura Bicului and Biciok, restore telephone communications and evacuate radioactive materials from Transdniestria.
“There have already been welcome and positive results from these changes and, though much remains to be done, there is a new spirit of optimism which we hope to capitalize on as much as possible,” she said.
Brush emphasized the importance of the Mission’s democratization activities and efforts to promote human rights and media freedom.
“Though resolving the conflict remains our overarching goal, we strive to devote equal attention to the OSCE Mission’s democratization and human rights mandate”, added Brush. “Democracy also implies the participation of all people in society, including women and minority communities.”
