OSCE Mission to Moldova promotes environmental co-operation across the Dniestr/Nistru River
VADUL LUI VODA, Moldova, 29 March 2011 – Members of Moldovan and Transdniestrian expert working groups on agriculture and ecology and representatives from non-governmental organizations from both banks of the River Dniestr/Nistru discussed environmental co-operation during a meeting held today by the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
The event, held in the town of Vadul lui Voda near Chisinau, is part of the Mission’s efforts to build confidence between the sides in the Transdniestrian conflict. Participants discussed matters related to the disposal of obsolete and dangerous pesticides, a meeting of the Aarhus Convention to be held in Chisinau in the summer and opportunities for joint environment-related work.
“Environmental issues affect everyone, no matter which side of the river they live on. We are pleased to be able to help the sides find ways to co-operate to protect the people of the region,” said Ambassador Philip Remler, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
“Effectively managing river basin resources, reducing the threats of pollution, disposing of dangerous pesticides, and dealing with emergencies are all matters which can be best done in partnership between the sides and between central and local authorities and civil society.”
Participants in the roundtable meeting discussed the fourth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) and associated preparatory meetings, to be held 29 June to 1 July in Chisinau. Up to 350 representatives of the 52 states signatory to the convention will attend the session.
