OSCE Chairmanship Representative, in Moldova, opens exhibition to mark Mission’s 20 years, stresses need for trust
CHISINAU, 23 April 2013 – The OSCE Mission to Moldova marked today its 20th anniversary with the opening of an art exhibition entitled “Artists building trust”.
The exhibition shows works of artists from both sides of the Dniester/Nistru river, featuring Moldovan landscapes and the river itself as a symbol of peace and inclusiveness.
“While we can look back with pride at the progress the OSCE Mission has helped bring over the past two decades in creating a more democratic and stable society, this artwork serves as a reminder of the unfulfilled potential of this country and the divisions to be overcome,” said the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for conflicts, Ambassador Andrii Deshchytsia, opening the exhibition.
“I would like to commemorate this anniversary with a bright eye to the future and share with all of you our vision of prosperity, security and democracy for Moldova. We will continue to work with people from both banks to find common ground in order to build a better future,” added Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova Ambassador Jennifer Brush. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Popov also spoke during the opening ceremony.
During his three-day visit to Moldova, Deshchytsia will meet with Chief Negotiators Eugen Carpov and Nina Shtanski to discuss the preparations for the next round of 5+2 talks on the Transdniestrian settlement process.
“I will urge both sides to redouble their efforts towards reaching a lasting settlement and to approach the upcoming round of negotiations with a constructive and positive attitude,” he said.
Deshchytsia will also visit the left bank of Rybnitsa to discuss dismantling an unused cable car over the river that poses a public health hazard and other projects that bring the two sides together.
The next round of the 5+2 talks are scheduled to take place in Odessa on 23 and 24 May. The 5+2 format includes representatives of the sides, mediators and observers in the negotiation process – Moldova, Transdniestria, the OSCE, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, the US and the EU.
