On Wednesday 26 October 2011 the OSCE Mission in Kosovo will launch a photo catalogue and an accompanying report on the condition and maintenance of Orthodox Graveyards in Kosovo.
The aim of the catalogue is to provide an overview of the condition and usage of Serbian Orthodox graveyards and to help Kosovo institutions, as well as international and civil society organizations to understand, and where necessary improve, the condition of the graveyards. While the photo catalogue is a record of the physical condition of 392 Orthodox graveyards surveyed by the OSCE, the report identifies factors that were found to be linked to the poor condition of most of these graveyards and makes recommendations for their improvement.
Publishing of the catalogue and report is one of the OSCE Mission’s activities aimed at helping preserve religious and cultural heritage sites in Kosovo, and follows extensive research carried out by the Mission.
Given the importance assigned to burial sights in the Orthodox tradition, improvements to the condition of the graveyards also helps create a more favourable atmosphere for the return of refugees and internally displaced persons of the Orthodox faith, primarily Kosovo Serbs.
