Registration of new Kosovo Serbian party open for review
PRISTINA 17 March 2005
PRISTINA, 17 March 2005 - The Serbian Democratic Party of Kosovo and Metohija (SDPKM) has today completed its registration requirements with the Political Party Registration Office of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo. A final decision on registration will be given following a 14-day period in which the public is invited to review the registration documents.
The SDPKM was established as a political party in 19 October 2004 by Slavisa Petkovic.
The OSCE Political Party Registration Office has been given the responsibility of registering political parties under UNMIK Regulation 2004/11"On the registration and operation of political parties in Kosovo".
Once all registration materials have been submitted - including the party's programme, statute, and logo - they are made available to the public for review and comments.
According to the Regulation, "Any person may object to an application on one or more of the grounds set out in section 4 by submitting such objections in writing, together with any information or material substantiating the objections, to the Office within fourteen (14) days of the publication of the application."
It should be noted that the SDKPM is a successor of the Civic Initiative Serbia, a body which took part in last year's Kosovo general elections. The president of the party is now Minister of Returns and Communities in the Kosovo Government.
Promoting transparency in the political party registration process is part of the OSCE's continuing commitment in supporting the development of democratic institutions in Kosovo. The Political Party Registration Office is located in the OSCE Mission HQ in Prishtinë/Pristina. Anyone wishing to view the documents can come between 10:00 and 12:00 on weekdays from 18 to 31 March 2005.
For further information, please contact Ms. Ardiana Gashi or Ms. Drita Gjeli, Political Party Registration Office, +381 (0)38 500 162 ext 452 or 423.
