Radio Television Kosovo Board of Directors to hold first meeting
PRISTINA 25 September 2001
PRISTINA, 25 September 2001 (OSCE) - The first meeting of the Board of Directors of Radio-Television Kosovo (RTK), is being held today, chaired by Ambassdor Daan Everts, OSCE Head of Mission.
The board of directors will determine and advise on RTK's budget and policy. The nine-member board, as set down in the regulation "On the Establishment of Radio Television Kosovo", is made up of six representatives from Kosovo and three international representatives. The board will elect a chairperson at its inaugural meeting.
"It is important for Kosovo to have an independent public service broadcaster providing viewers news and information free from political influence. The new board of directors will now guide RTK as it carries out its mandate and moves towards complete Kosovo management," said Margarethe Matic, acting Director of OSCE's Media Affairs Department. Nominations for the local representatives were sought through the NGO Assembly, the Association of Journalists of Kosovo, the Senate of the University of Pristina, and the Workers' Union of RTK. To protect RTK's independence and prevent any conflict of interest, board members cannot hold elected public office, be a member of the executive body of a political party or have financial interests in the telecommunications or broadcasting industries.
The OSCE has been supporting public broadcasting since its arrival in Kosovo in July 1999. The Mission helped get the station on-air and become an independent public service broadcaster. RTK now has seven hours daily of television programming and two Kosovo-wide radio stations.
