Recently-appointed judges attend seminars in Kosovo
PRISTINA 8 November 2000
PRISTINA, 8 November 2000 - More than 100 recently-appointed judges and prosecutors will be undergoing training over the coming week, organized by the OSCE Kosovo Judicial Institute, in co-operation with the Council of Europe.
It's the second round of training for those judges and prosecutors who were sworn-in in August and September 2000.
Fourty-five judges and prosecutors based in the Peja/Pec and Prizren regions will take part in a two-day session in Prizren on 9 and 10 November. Next week, a total of 70 judges and prosecutors from Prishtine/Pristina, Mitrovice/Mitrovica and Gjilan/Gnjilane will participate in two separate three-day sessions in Pristina from 13-18 November.
The series of induction seminars and workshops are being presented by Kosovar and international experts and are designed to help the participants develop their professional skills and knowledge in some key areas.
During the training, the new judges and prosecutors will receive introductions to, for example, criminal procedure; the relationship between the investigating judge, the public prosecutor and the police; property rights and the functions of the newly-established Office of the Ombudsperson.
The Kosovo Judicial Institute, set up by OSCE to provide legal education for judges and prosecutors, has an important role to play in strengthening the independence of the judiciary and rule of law in Kosovo.
