Kosovo Central Election Commission attends conference in Sweden
PRISTINA 6 September 2000
PRISTINA, 5 September 2000 - Members of the Central Election Commission, the body responsible for the conduct of elections in Kosovo, are attending an important two-day seminar in Sweden this week designed to help them learn from other electoral experiences in the Balkans.
The seminar, International Electoral Experience in the Balkans: Lessons for Kosovo, has been organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the OSCE Mission in Kosovo. The conference is funded by the European Agency for Reconstruction and the Swedish Foreign Ministry.
The seminar, which takes place in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, 6-7 September, will permit the Central Election Commission members to meet with experts involved in the organization of elections elsewhere in the Balkans in order to gain from their experiences in conducting elections.
In a post-conflict developing democracy, it is essential that all those participating in the electoral process have confidence in it and consider it to be transparent, secure and well-organized. With this in mind, the seminar will also provide a valuable opportunity for Commission members to gain specific insights into three key sets of relationships: those which exist between the body managing an election and political parties, the media, and security services.
Central Election Commission chairman and OSCE Head of Mission, Ambassador Daan Everts, is being joined in Stockholm by the eight sitting Kosovar members of the Commission and the OSCE Director of Election Operations, Jeff Fischer. The list of distinguished presenters includes Mr. Carl Bildt, UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to the Balkans; Mr. Amir Muharemi, Special Advisor to the President of the Republic of Croatia; Ambassador Robert Frowick, U.S. Special Advisor for Balkan Elections.
International IDEA is known for its work in promoting sustainable democracy and improvements in electoral processes worldwide.
