Three new Political Party Service Centres to open in Kosovo
PRISTINA 26 July 2000
PRISTINA, 26 July 2000 - Three new Political Party Service Centres are due to open around Kosovo within the next fortnight. The first of the new centres will be officially opened in Podujevo at 16.00 hours Wednesday 26 July. The Podujevo centre, along with the centres in Prizren and Gnjilane/Gjilan, which are scheduled to open next week, will bring the total to eight.
In addition to the three new centres, the Mitrovica Political Party Service Centre, which has already been functioning for the past few months, will be officially opened by OSCE Head of Mission Daan Everts next Tuesday, 1 August. The Mitrovica centre is one of five already operating. The other four are located in Pristina, Pec/Peja, Srbica/Skenderaj and Orahovac/Rahovec.
In total, OSCE plans to establish 10 Political Party Service Centres at various locations throughout Kosovo. The Centres contain conference rooms and offices; equipment such as computers and photocopiers, as well as telephones and fax machines. Their aim is to provide Kosovo's political parties with access to training, logistical and other forms of support in order to build up their political campaigning capacity as well as their ability to communicate with their members and the voting public at large. The centres also provide them with opportunities to engage in discussions with each other.
The OSCE is working on a variety of levels to promote and support the development of mature, democratic political parties in Kosovo. Strengthening their organizational capacity is an important element of this programme. As well as the Political Party Service Centres, OSCE has also been organizing training programmes, focusing on the basic principles of political party organization, policy platform development and public relations.
