Process begins for Kosovo civil and voter registration
PRISTINA 14 April 2000
PRISTINA, 14 April 2000 - Next week sees the start of civil registration in Kosovo. This is the chance for every Kosovo resident to register, and will form the basis of the electoral register.
Kosovars who now live abroad, but who lived in Kosovo on 1st January 1998, may also be allowed to have their names placed on the electoral register. They must meet one of the same criteria which also apply within Kosovo to be included on the electoral roll: being born in Kosovo or having a parent born in Kosovo; living in Kosovo continuously for five years, or being able to show they were forced to leave and could therefore not complete the five year requirement.
In 32 countries registration by mail is planned; the necessary forms can be obtained from centres in Europe and North America. This operation is being conducted by the International Organization for Migration which has set up central telephone hotline numbers for people seeking further information. The Out-of-Kosovo Registration hotlines are:
Out-of-Kosovo registration for those in Albania, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro will be in person.
