Registration sites open to the media
PRISTINA 3 May 2000
PRISTINA, 3 May 2000 - More than 70 civil and electoral registration sites are now open across Kosovo. In the two weeks since the Joint Registration Taskforce of the OSCE and the United Nations Civil Administration launched the project, thousands of people have turned out to register and start the process of getting new papers.
This first phase of registration, targeted at those older than 16, is expected to take three months. But registration is an ongoing process; it will continue after the summer in order to build a comprehensive list of all Kosovars.
The registration project is employing 427 United Nations volunteers alongside more than 2,000 Kosovars. They are using computers to capture identity photographs, fingerprints and personal information which will go into the registry.
Strict checks are being made to ensure that there is no fraud and that those people who are registering are only those entitled to be included on the list.
For further details about how registration is being organised across the region, the media are invited to an on-site briefing.
