OSCE media freedom representative, in Malta, calls for full, transparent and independent investigation into murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia
VALLETTA, 3 November 2017 - OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Désir, in Malta today to attend the funeral of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, urged the country’s authorities to ensure that all means will be put in place to enable a full, transparent and independent investigation into the killing of the prominent investigative journalist.
"The murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia was an immense shock in Malta but also for many around the world. She was killed because she was an independent and free journalist. I am here to pay tribute to her memory and to her legacy. Her murder is a crime against free press and democracy," Désir said. "Such a barbaric act must not remain unpunished. I ask the Maltese authorities to ensure that a full, transparent and independent investigation is carried out quickly. I ask them to put in place all necessary means to identify both the perpetrators and the masterminds behind this heinous crime. There must be no mercy for those responsible for the assassination of the journalist."
The Representative recalled that Daphne Caruana Galizia was known as a journalist dedicated to uncovering sensitive issues in Maltese society, including corruption. For many years, she had been subject to severe harassment and threats for her critical work.
"Journalists are threatened and attacked because they are committed to sharing powerful information with the public. They need protection by the authorities in order to carry out their essential work," the Representative said.
Désir is in Malta where he attended the funeral of Daphne Caruana Galizia. He also met with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and other representatives of the authorities, urging them to regularly share information with the public on the process of the investigation into the murder.
"The family, friends and the entire journalist community deserve to know what exactly happened to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Making sure that the perpetrators and masterminds face the full power of justice is the first step in honouring her legacy," Désir said.
