OSCE Representative urges authorities to intensify efforts to solve murder of journalist Martin O’Hagan in Northern Ireland

VIENNA, 29 September 2016 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today urged the authorities in the United Kingdom to intensify their efforts to find the killers of investigative journalist Martin O’Hagan, who was shot and killed in September 2001.

“Fifteen years on from this horrific murder, no one has been brought to justice for the killing of O’Hagan,” Mijatović said. “It is high time for justice to be served in this case.”

O’Hagan, a reporter for the Sunday World, was shot dead in front of his wife on the night of 28 September 2001. The couple was walking to their home in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, when they were ambushed. O’Hagan was shot seven times while he was trying to shield his wife from the bullets. No one has been charged for the murder, though the Sunday World newspaper claims Ulster paramilitary forces were behind his death.
