OSCE media freedom representative calls on Ukrainian Parliament to fully revoke provisions limiting media freedom
VIENNA, 28 January 2014 - OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today welcomed the agreement between President Viktor Yanukovych and Ukrainian opposition leaders to repeal recent controversial legislation on public protests, including provisions limiting media freedom.
“This is an important step. I sincerely hope that the Verkhovna Rada will repeal the regressive provisions that relate to media freedom, as part of this decision,” Mijatović said.
Mijatović in particular pointed to the criminalization of defamation, the wide application of punishment of extremist activities that concern media freedom, the suppression of the independence of the national broadcasting regulator, and restrictions to internet freedom.
“As I stated on 16 January, these provisions could lead to disproportionate restrictions on media freedom that could stifle debate and the airing of dissenting views in Ukraine”.
The Representative reiterated her willingness to visit Ukraine and offered the assistance of her Office on resolving media-freedom issues.
