1997 Mediterranean Meeting on Security Model for the 21st Century
When
3 September 1997 (All day)
Where
Cairo
On 3-5 September 1997, representatives from across the OSCE region and its Mediterranean partners met in Cairo for the Seminar on a Security Model for the 21st Century: Implications for the Mediterranean Basin.
Participants reaffirmed the indivisibility of security in the OSCE region and the Mediterranean area. Many stressed the need to include a substantial Mediterranean component in the future OSCE security model and it was recognized that the OSCE could play an important role in the area. In particular, it could assist by promoting:
- the rule of law
- confidence-building measures in relations between the Mediterranean partners for co-operation
- co-operative strategies for dealing with common concerns such as terrorism
The Arab League and the Organization for African Unity were among the international organizations that took part.
