LONDON 8 March 2001
LONDON, 7 March 2001 - The Chairman in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, has expressed his strong concern about the recent escalation of violence and displacement of population in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in the region bordering the Kosovo province of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The latest events have led to yet another tragedy. The Chairman-in-Office deeply regrets the losses of lives due to the activities of extremist groups. The Chairman-in-Office commends the Macedonian authorities for having shown self-restraint in dealing with the situation and expressed his hope that the political approach will prevail.
"I strongly request the immediate cessation of violence and call on all parties to isolate the extremists active in the region," stated Mr. Geoana.
The Chairman-in-Office also reiterated his strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
