Chairman-in-Office meets United Nations Secretary General

NEW YORK, 2 February 2001 - The Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, today met with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Mr. Geoana highlighted the main objectives and priorities of the OSCE and expressed the interest for an enhanced collaboration with the United Nations based on the principles of complementarity, subsidiarity and synergy. He emphasized that the dialogue between the Organizations should reflect the importance that both Organizations attach to the operational co-operation between their staff in the field. The Chairman-in-Office specifically mentioned co-operation in fighting organized crime and illegal transborder trafficking as well as in the field of human rights.
The situation in South-eastern Europe was also discussed. In this context the Chairman-in-Office emphasized the importance of a comprehensive evaluation, based on 'lessons learned' in the Balkans to be conducted by all Organizations involved in the region.
Secretary General Kofi Annan welcomed the efforts taken by the Romanian Chairmanship of the OSCE and expressed his personal support for a continuos and dynamic collaboration between the Organizations.
