OSCE Chairperson-in-Office issues statement on local elections in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

VIENNA, 12 September 2000 - The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, welcomes the holding of municipal elections in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on 10 September 2000.
The Chairperson-in-Office regrets that several persons were injured due to violent incidents on polling day and expresses her hope that on the occasion of the second round of the voting such incidents will be avoided.
The Chairperson-in-Office refers to the preliminary findings of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, which observed the elections. Though some shortcomings were reported, the Chairperson-in-Office calls on all political forces in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to respect the outcome of the vote.
