OSCE Chairman-in-Office issues declaration on Chechnya

BERN, 28 May 1996 - The following press statement was issued today by the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Swiss Foreign Minister Flavio Cotti:
The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE welcomes the meeting between President Yeltsin and a Chechen delegation, as well as the signing of the agreement between Russian Prime Minister Chernomyrdin and Chechen Leader Semlimkhan Yandarbiev in Moscow on 27 May 1996, as an important step in the search for a peaceful settlement of the Chechen conflict.
He hopes that this agreement marks the beginning of a process leading to a lasting political settlement which will bring war and suffering to a quick end.
As during the preparation of the meeting in Moscow on 27 May the OSCE, through its Assistance Group in Chechnya, is ready to continue to actively support the peace process by providing its Good Offices during further negotiations and in implementation of the above-mentioned Agreement.
