Greek OSCE Chair commends Serbia on reform progress, offers OSCE support
BELGRADE, 2 February 2009 - The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, congratulated Serbia today on its progress towards European integration. Speaking during a visit to the country, she also encouraged authorities in Belgrade to continue reforms.
"Serbia plays an essential role in ensuring stability and prosperity not only in the Balkans, but also in the rest of the South Eastern European region at this challenging time. I am impressed by Serbia's progress toward building a democratic, politically stable society that is working hard to continue implementing reforms," Bakoyannis said.
She welcomed the Government's efforts to further strengthen rule of law and the independence and capabilities of the judiciary and of the law enforcement institutions.
"The OSCE is committed to supporting further reforms in these fields," she said.
Bakoyannis encouraged the country to continue its efforts to fight organized crime and corruption, and welcomed improvements in co-operation with the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
During her one-day visit, Bakoyannis met President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, as well as civil society representatives.
