OSCE hosts meeting to discuss economic rehabilitation projects in zone of Georgian-Ossetian conflict
VIENNA, 12 November 2007 - Progress in implementing internationally-funded economic rehabilitation projects in the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict was discussed at an OSCE-chaired meeting in Vienna today.
The Steering Committee, which includes representatives of the donors and the sides (Georgian, South Ossetian, North Ossetian and Russian Federation), discussed progress made in implementing ongoing, jointly agreed projects, including a number of water-related initiatives to be completed this year. The implementation of infrastructure projects such as rehabilitation of schools, improvement of health facilities and development of the business and agricultural spheres were also discussed at the meeting.
"The OSCE and its Chairmanship are ready, along with the sides, to support implementation of these projects that are of a vital importance for strengthening confidence-building on the ground," said Arturo Perez, representative of the OSCE Spanish Chairmanship, who welcomed participants at the meeting.
"This meeting is the best example of how things can work well when there is a political will. We should exert this political will in all the other fields and hopefully move forward to the resolution of the conflict."
Ambassador Terhi Hakala, Head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, said: "I am glad that this meeting is taking place today. It is important that the progress made in the Economic Rehabilitation Programme is presented here for all donors. This meeting once again strengthens transparency of the process between all parties involved in the implementation of these very important projects."
The Steering Committee meets regularly to agree on implementation of projects managed by the OSCE. International donors pledged some 8 million euros to the programme, aimed at building confidence between communities in the area.
