Artists and designers are invited to help challenge the binary, “us vs. them”, thinking that often underpins violent extremist narratives. Upload your entry until 19 June via eYeka and win! Info and rules: www.osce.org/letsdoodle. The contest is a part of the OSCE United in Countering Violent Extremism (#UnitedCVE) campaign.
OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière, and OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier will open the two-day conference on 31 May 2016, which will focus on preventing and countering Violent Extremism and Radicalization that Lead to Terrorism (VERLT). High-ranking representatives from the UN and the Council of Europe will address participants.
Participants will discuss, among other things, how to deal with returning foreign terrorist fighters and possible ways for their re-integration into society. The Conference also offers a forum for exchange on international trends concerning the fight against terrorism, focusing especially on the role of youth and women.
Preventing and countering VERLT has been a priority of OSCE counter-terrorism activities for many years, placing special emphasis on the rule of law and human rights aspects, as well as the role of civil society. This OSCE approach is supportive of the United Nations’ Action Plan to Prevent Violent Extremism presented in January 2016.
