OSCE Centre helps Kyrgyzstan implement UN Resolution 1325
BISHKEK, 25 July 2012 - A two-day OSCE training seminar for members of the Inter-Agency Working Group established by Kyrgyzstan to develop a national action plan on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security ended today in Bishkek.
“This timely initiative of the government complements the work that the OSCE Centre in Bishkek has been carrying out over the past two years with the establishment of the ‘Women’s Initiative Groups’, a network of women leaders working in communities in the south as conflict prevention agents. This work on gender and security piloted at the local level can feed into national policy,” said Fabio Piana, the Senior Human Dimension Officer at the OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
The Chairperson of the Inter-Agency Working Group, Deputy Interior Minister Kursan Asanov said: “The establishment of the Inter-Agency Working Group demonstrates the Government’s political will to address issues related to women, peace and security. The Working Group plans to hold a series of countrywide consultative meetings with representatives of civil society and women’s organizations to assess current needs with a view to including women at all stages of conflict prevention, conflict resolution, peace-building and reconciliation processes.”
Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security Irina Karamushkina highlighted that “issues related to the role of women in conflict resolution found a new significance in Kyrgyzstan after the events of June 2010. ”
The Inter-Agency Working Group was established by a decree of the Prime Minister on 27 June 2012 and consists of representatives from eight ministries. The seminar was co-organized by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and UN Women in co-operation with the Interior Ministry as the lead agency of the Working Group.
