Media’s role in reporting on violent extremism and international terrorism discussed at OSCE-supported training in Bishkek
BISHKEK, 29 September 2015 – The Kyrgyz State Committee of National Security, in co-operation with the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and the Development Fund for spiritual culture "Yyman" held a one-day training course for media representatives on their role in reporting on countering violent extremism and international terrorism.
The training course aimed at expanding the knowledge of media representatives on reporting on terrorism and extremism issues, and enhancing the interaction of the national security agencies and media in addressing these global threats.
“It is important that public authorities create the conditions for critical media coverage of terrorism issues, and that the authorities act as a reliable and credible interlocutor on the discussion of these issues,” said Head of the Politico-military Dimension at the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, Maciej Dachowski. “The media can credibly report on the consequences of terrorism, the underlying aims and the motivations of terrorists, but also address awareness deficits and initiate inclusive debates within society regarding problems that may lead to violent radicalization as well as their solution. The course reflects the concept of the OSCE's comprehensive approach to security and we will continue working in this direction next year.”
Participants discussed issues and problems concerning media reporting on extremism and terrorism issues, the use of the internet for spreading radical ideas and the relevant legislation. They were also trained on how to prepare articles, conduct interviews, draft special features, and how to avoid propaganda in reporting.
The training course is a part of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek project on combatting terrorism and arms control.
