Over 1,400 households in Isfana city receive access to clean drinking water

The new water supply system for Isfana city, Batken region, opened on 29 September 2014. As of yesterday, over 1,400 households have access to clean drinking water.

The Isfana city administration, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and UN World Food Programme (WFP) supported the project.

Authorized Representative of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in Batken region Razakov Zhenish Parpievich, GIZ Project Manager, Peter Thominski, Senior Field Representative of the OSCE Centre in Osh Kristin Hoeltge, and UN WFP Country Director Ram Saravanamuttu  attended the ceremony.

The project for construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems in Isfana ended on August 31, 2014. The communities of Taylan, Pulon and Uzun Sai, with a population of over 1,400 families, now have access to safe drinking water.

The water mains were constructed along 11 km, including 2 groundwater intake structures, 4 metal tanks with a total capacity of 150 cubic meters, 20 water intake columns and waterworks for  regulation and management – the total budget of 150.000 EUR  (10.5 million soms), was secured by the City Hall of Isfana, OSCE and GIZ.  

Additionally the WFP provided 22 tons, 18.572 EUR (1.3. million soms), of food supplies during the construction of the works.

The representatives of OSCE, GIZ and UN WFP in Kyrgyz Republic noted the particular importance of a collaborative approach in the implementation of projects to improve water infrastructure in conflict areas.
