Bosnia and Herzegovina adopts Stability Pact Charter for Media Freedom
SARAJEVO 29 June 2001
SARAJEVO, 29 June 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina welcomes the adoption of the Stability Pact Charter for Media Freedom by the country's Council of Ministers. The Council of Ministers also issued a statement, prepared by the Stability Pact Media Working Group of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with which it obliged itself to protect and promote principles contained in the Charter for Media Freedom.
"This is a major step forward for this country and for its further development towards a democratic society. On this long and difficult path free and pluralistic media will play a key role," said Regan McCarthy, the Director of the Mission's Department of Media Affairs. "This is why we welcome the adoption of the Charter by the Council of Ministers. We hope that Bosnia and Herzegovina will follow this statement with real action to implement it."
The Media Working Group was established in early 2001 as a collaboration of the OSCE Mission and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry for European Integration. Its main tasks are to analyze the media situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to define priorities in the process of enhancing the quality of local media, to co-ordinate within the Stability Pact framework, and to lobby the country's authorities to adopt the Charter for Media Freedom. The Media Working Group now operates as an independent body.
