OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina opens Political Resource Center in Ljubuski
SARAJEVO 23 June 2000
SARAJEVO, 23 June 2000 - Ambassador Robert Barry, Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Robert Patrick Jacobs, USAID Mission's Deputy Director, today will formally open a new Political Resource Center (PRC) in Ljubuski, together with representatives of the international community and municipal authorities.
"The PRCs are an integral part of our Mission's democratization activities at the local level throughout Bosnia that are designed to level the playing field and assist smaller parties," Ambassador Barry said, upon his departure to Ljubuski this morning. "OSCE PRCs enable political parties to improve their outreach to citizens and to expand their message to areas where, due to a lack of basic infrastructure, many have not yet penetrated. This also advances USAID
objectives to promote political pluralism and create more democratic parties throughout BiH," said Robert Patrick Jacobs, Deputy Director of USAID.
The OSCE's network of PRCs has been established since 1998 to provide political parties and independent candidates with the necessary resources to participate in the creation of a pluralistic and multi-ethnic political environment. Their activities have significantly increased inter-entity
political party contacts and co-operation between opposition parties. They have also enabled parties to establish and maintain direct contact with their supporters and reach out to new voters. PRCs are located in Bijeljina, Brcko, Doboj, Gorazde, Livno, Lukavica, Mostar, Travnik, Trebinje, Zenica and Zvornik.
The OSCE plans to open additional PRCs in the near future.
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace, the OSCE Mission activities are to promote Democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of Professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the Human Rights situation, supervise the conduct of Elections, and encourage Regional Stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
