ALMATY 1 December 2004
ALMATY, 1 December 2004 - The rights of migrant workers in Central Asia were the focus of a meeting on Monday in Shymkent, South Kazakhstan which brought together representatives of NGOs and international organizations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The event was organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, the Commission on Human Rights under the President of Kazakhstan and the Sociological Resource Centre, an NGO.
"As Kazakhstan becomes a more attractive destination for labour migrants, the challenges arising must be addressed in a way that satisfies all sides while at the same time honouring commitments made by OSCE participating States," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, the Head of OSCE Centre.
Participants urged authorities to adopt bilateral agreements on the status of labour migrants, reform legislation and set up special detention centres for illegal migrant workers.
