ALMATY 5 November 2004
ALMATY, 5 November 2004 - Raising awareness of regional authorities and the media on human trafficking issues and promoting effective joint actions was the aim of several workshops held in two regions of Kazakhstan.
Organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, the Ministry of Justice and regional justice departments, a series of workshops for state officials, as well as for media representatives were held since 26 October in Shymkent and in Petropavlovsk.
The workshops for state officials brought together representatives of institutions responsible for the implementation of a regional plan on anti-trafficking, including officials of regional departments dealing with tourism, labour and social protection, education, justice, law-enforcement and legal issues.
In the workshops for journalists, the participants shared their experience in writing stories, producing documentaries, TV and radio programmes as well as filming social video advertising about human trafficking. The workshops were conducted by the Ukrainian journalist Anton Topchiy, one of the authors of a TV documentary on trafficking, "Victims of silence".
In raising awareness on trafficking in human beings, the participants recommended more social advertising on regional TV channels, as well as amendments to current legislation. They also discussed shelters for victims of trafficking to be funded by local budgets.
The Centre will follow-up with similar events in the future in order to raise public awareness and promote co-operation between state, local authorities, the media and NGOs in the fight against human trafficking.
