Almaty hosts international forum on promoting public-private co-operation in industrial restructuring
ALMATY 2 November 2004
ALMATY, 2 November 2004 - Topical issues related to industrial restructuring in transition economies will be discussed at a two-day forum on Public-Private Co-operation in Industrial Restructuring which started today in Almaty.
About 150 participants from countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Europe are attending the event, which is organized jointly by the OSCE Centre in Almaty and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, in co-operation with the Kazakhstani Government.
The Forum focuses on outstanding problems of public-private partnership in industrial restructuring in countries of the former Soviet Union and south-eastern Europe.
Representatives from governments, labour unions, the private sector and academic institutions will discuss ways of reconciling the interests of various stakeholders in handling painful issues such as unemployment, income loss, deteriorating quality of life and regional decline which have emerged in the course of market transformations.
Best practices and inspiring case studies of socially-sensitive economic and technological transformations at enterprise, municipal and regional levels will be presented at this gathering.
"Restructuring represents a challenge which requires the anticipation and management of change while simultaneously tackling issues of economic, social and environmental significance," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, Head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty.
The Forum is expected to adopt recommendations to central, regional and municipal governments of transition economies to assist them in enhancing co-operation between major players in industrial restructuring, as well as improving the business environment for domestic and foreign investors.
