Role of democratization in regional security discussed at OSCE-supported conference in Almaty

ALMATY, 28 May 2009 - Democratization processes in the context of OSCE's comprehensive approach to security and the role of the OSCE in promoting human rights was the topic of a conference today, supported by the OSCE Centre in Astana.
The event brought together parliamentarians, government officials, local experts, diplomats, civil society representatives, academics and journalists.
Participants discussed the importance of democratization for ensuring security and stability within the OSCE region. Talks also focused on how countries' experiences and OSCE assistance can contribute to promoting democratic culture and mechanisms for participatory democracy locally, nationally and regionally.
"Democratization is a continuous process of strengthening democratic structures, the respect for human rights, the rule of law, peace and security. The OSCE Centre in Astana, jointly with the OSCE institutions, stands ready to further support the Kazakhstani government and civil society in implementing OSCE principles and commitments," said Jeannette Kloetzer, Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre.
"The experience of Kazakhstan contributes to addressing various issues in the OSCE context, and the forthcoming Kazakh Chairmanship to OSCE will foster the opening of the Organization's additional potential," added Gani Kasymov, a member of the Kazakh Parliament. "In this regard, critical views and the analytical approaches of today's conference participants will boost the country's preparations for 2010."
With a view to Kazakhstan's 2010 OSCE Chairmanship, the conference offered recommendations on how to strengthen democratization processes and improve regional security as well as on enhancing co-operation within the OSCE.
The event was organized by the OSCE Centre, the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies and the al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The conference follows a series of roundtable meetings, academic conferences, lectures and publications that have aimed to raise awareness of the Organization's principles and commitments and assist the Kazakhstani Government's preparations for the 2010 Chairmanship.
