BOROVOYE, KAZAKHSTAN, 8 September 2006 - An OSCE-organized seminar on improving public access to government information by strengthening relations between the authorities and the media began today in the northern city of Borovoye.
"Both the authorities and the media should help to ensure transparency through regular and truthful reporting on the work of State institutions and issues of public importance," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty.
Journalists from the main Kazakhstani media outlets in the cities of Astana and Almaty, and representatives of the press services from key government bodies are taking part in the two-day seminar. They will discuss the co-operation between the press offices and the media, as well as international and local legislation and the role of the civil society.
The event, organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty and the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, is part of a training programme for several OSCE participating States.
