OSCE Centre assists in modernizing journalism education in Turkmenistan
ASHGABAT, 7 November 2012 – Journalism instructors from the Institute of International Relations of Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry and the Magtymguly Turkmen State University discussed modern standards and methods of teaching journalism at an OSCE-organized seminar that took place in Ashgabat today.
“The OSCE encourages participating States to support reforms in journalism education which should reflect the global character of journalism,” said Ambassador Ivo Petrov, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.
“Acknowledging the importance of international co-operation in journalism education, the Centre organized this seminar to promote best international practices in journalism teaching in Turkmenistan”.
During the seminar, the journalism instructors discussed media convergence and how to teach it to journalism students, new media skills and practical methods of teaching journalism.
“Modern journalism imposes serious obligations on journalism teachers who have to keep up with the times and be conversant in the constantly changing media environment to provide their students with the most up-to-date knowledge,” said Elena Zaburdaeva, the Deputy Dean of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), who conducted the seminar.
As part of the project, Zaburdaeva is conducting this week a course on mass media in the information age for students of international journalism at the Institute of International Relations. During the four-day course, future media professionals are discussing the functions and transformation of the modern mass media, the use of Internet in communications management and social media. Practical exercises provided students with an opportunity to build online journalism skills and explore the use of the gender-neutral language in the modern journalism.
Both activities are organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, in co-operation with the Institute of International Relations, and are fully funded by the Government of Germany.
