OSCE missions recall International Human Rights Day
TIRANA 10 December 2002
TIRANA, 10 December 2002 - The OSCE Presence in Albania congratulates all Albanian citizens, state and political leaders, non-governmental organizations and other individuals and institutions who have been dedicated to promoting human rights standards in the country on the International Human Rights Day.
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", says the Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted on 10 December 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly.
The UN member countries made a commitment to respect and protect the dignity, rights and freedoms of every citizen. The Declaration calls on every individual and every organ of society to promote respect for human rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance.
The respect and promotion of human rights has been the basis for all OSCE activities. In the 1992 CSCE (OSCE) Helsinki Summit Document, the participating States expressed their strong determination to ensure full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, to build, strengthen and protect democratic institutions, as well as to promote tolerance throughout society.
The OSCE Presence will continue to assist Albania in the implementation of its international human right obligations, particularly in the field of anti-trafficking. It looks forward to a continued strengthening of state institutions, especially the judiciary and the Office of the Peoples Advocate, the primary human rights agency in Albania.
