OSCE Presence in Albania welcomes amendments to law on radio and TV
TIRANA 11 November 2002
TIRANA, 11 November 2002 - The OSCE Presence in Albania welcomed the unanimous adoption of amendments to the "Law on Public and Private Radio and Television in the Republic of Albania" by the Parliament.
The amendments of last Thursday are a result of close co-operation between Albanian institutions and the international partners. They create a legal framework for implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding for the mapping of radio and TV frequencies in Albania, signed between the National Council of Radio and Television (NCRT), the OSCE Presence, DANIDA Albania and IREX Albania on 24 July 2002.
The mapping of radio and TV signals in the country will provide the authorities with an accurate map of the coverage of each station and frequency. This will lead to the adoption of a national frequency plan within the next five months. During this period, no new licenses will be issued. The plan, carried out by the NCRT, will enable the institution "to make the final determination for the possible further allocation of broadcasting licenses, and prepare a strategy for possible future expansion for the electronic media industry".
The OSCE Presence looks forward to continuing its co-operation with the Albanian authorities and institutions, and stands ready to offer them its further advice and assistance in the process of bringing Albania closer to European integration.
