OSCE remains ready to assist in preparations for Albania elections

TIRANA, 8 February 2001 - The following statement was issued by Ambassador Geert-Hinrich Ahrens, Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, during a press conference in Tirana today:
"ODIHR Director, Ambassador Stoudmann, has been briefed on the current preparations of the upcoming elections. During his two-day visit in Tirana, he has had the opportunity to meet the leading statesmen and politicians of the country.
"As you all know, the clock is ticking and deadlines must be met. The international community is very much interested to see effective preparations for the parliamentary elections being carried out.
"We, as the OSCE Presence in Tirana, would like to stress once more, that it is the responsibility of a sovereign country to ensure fair elections. The OSCE will, as always, be ready to assist all efforts leading up towards this common goal.
"We appeal to all political forces to meet their obligations in the forthcoming weeks - to the benefit of the country and its people."
