New OSCE regional office opens in Durres, Albania

TIRANA, Albania, 22 September 1999 - OSCE Head of Presence in Albania, Ambassador Geert-Hinrich Ahrens, attended the opening ceremony of the new OSCE Regional Office in Durres, Albania's largest coastal city.
The Durres Regional Office covers three districts: Durres proper, Kruja and Kavaja which make up the Prefecture. It will deal with important issues, such as public order, commercial development, customs issues, democratization, development of civil society and the environment.
The office is staffed by Eugene O'Sullivan and John Mattson, former heads of OSCE Regional Offices of Kukes and Korca, as well as two national staff members. Staff will focussing on issues relating customs, law and order, environment, building a civic and democratic society.
During the ceremonies, Ambassador Ahrens delivered a speech in the Albanian language that was warmly received by the audience present. "I hope this opening will be seen as a clear intent of the ongoing support to Albania by the OSCE to further its programs of reform and development," he said.
The ceremony was held on the premises of the new regional office, centrally located at L.9, Rr. Aleksander Goga, No. 131, Durres. Guests attending the ceremony included Albania Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pellumb Xhufi; the Prefect, Martin Cukalla; Mayor Arqile Gorea; local MPs; representatives of international organizations based in Durres, and General Pietro Frisone, commander of Commzwest.
