Children in Korça learn about OSCE Presence in Albania’s work
A group of some 90 children in the city of Korça, in south-west of Albania took part in interactive and fun activities organized by the OSCE Presence in Albania on 5 August 2014, to help them understand topics such as human rights, tolerance and non-discrimination.
The children, the majority of whom are from the Roma and Egyptian communities or have disabilities, were attending a summer camp organized by the Municipality of Korça.
Five teams from the Presence staff led role-playing games, read stories and drew pictures with the children to help them understand topics that are key to the Presence’s mandate such as the rule of law, community policing and the value of public participation in decision-making. Given the diverse backgrounds of the children, special emphasis was placed on developing a positive community atmosphere, enhancing social inclusion and mutual respect. Another activity involved local police officers, who discussed important safety information with the children.
The Presence also encouraged the children to become active participants in their communities. In one activity, children took pictures of different spots around the city, focusing on things they would like to be improved. Their photographs will be exhibited by the Municipality, together with drawings by other children of things they especially like about their city, that will serve as inspiration for future municipal improvement projects.
