All activities related to security, including research, prevention and responses to VERLT, need to be gender-sensitive in order to be effective. This means taking into account the different perspectives of men and women’s involvement in VERLT. It also means looking at gender mainstreaming in the prevention of, and response to, VERLT by communities and governments. This includes the security sector, where gender mainstreaming has generally been slow to progress.
Strengthening gender awareness in parts of the security sector involved in preventing and countering VERLT, and promoting advancement of women in relevant law enforcement and government positions are some of the elements that contributes to the effectiveness of these institutions. It also enables the security sector to better respond to the entire population.
The target audience for this event will be law enforcement from mid- to senior level, policy makers and government advisers working on preventing and responding to VERLT. Representatives from independent oversight bodies, academia and justice institutions will also attend the event.
