Countering proliferation of weapons of mass destruction focus of OSCE workshop in Kazakhstan
A two-day workshop on implementing the United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) on countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Kazakhstan concluded on 30 June, 2017 in Astana.
Some 25 government officials from the Financial Monitoring Committee, the State Revenue Committee, the National Security Committee and the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Internal Affairs and Investment and Development took part in the event.
Participants were familiarized with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) standards and UNSCR requirements related to preventing and disrupting the financial flows for developing WMD. They also learned about best practices in implementing the UNSCR obligations and improving national legislation to address WMD proliferation financing.
The workshop was led by experts from the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (EAG), the Financial Action Task Force Training and Research Institute and the EU Outreach Programme in Export Control of Dual-Use Items.
The event was organized by the OSCE Programme Office in Astana in partnership with the Financial Monitoring Committee of the Ministry of Finance and the United States Embassy in Kazakhstan.
It is part of the Office’s multi-year efforts to promote good governance and combat money laundering and terrorism financing.
