Italian Parliamentarian Giovanni Kessler to lead OSCE observation of Armenian elections

COPENHAGEN, 23 May 2003 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Dutch Foreign Minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, has appointed Giovanni Kessler, member of the Italian Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, as his Special Representative during the Armenian Parliamentary Elections on 25 May.
Mr. Kessler will lead the OSCE Election Observers and deliver the preliminary post-election statement on Monday, 26 May. The OSCE parliamentary observer team includes representatives of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly from Austria, Belarus, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The OSCE parliamentarians work in close partnership with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE) on election observation projects. The Parliamentary Assembly of the CoE is also sending a large number of parliamentarians to observe the elections in Armenia.
The OSCE Election Observation Mission is a joint effort between the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The OSCE Observation Mission will assess the conduct of the elections, the political campaign and the role of the media.
