Event summary
In an effort to address the challenges that youth face in relation to political participation, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) organized two Youth Leadership Forums in 2014. The Forums were held within the framework of the project, titled “Promoting and increasing youth political participation and civic engagement in the OSCE region”. The Forums brought together almost 100 experts and young leaders from 37 OSCE participating States including politicians, journalists, civil servants, civil society, media representatives and online activists. The purpose of the events was to discuss how the OSCE and its institutions can better assist participating States in meeting their commitments on promoting the inclusion of youth in democratic processes. Participants agreed on a number of recommendations on how to enhance youth participation in the OSCE region that are presented in this report.
Seminar in Belgrade
Following these forums, in co-operation with the OSCE Mission to Serbia, ODIHR is organizing a 1 day seminar on youth political participation in Belgrade for relevant stakeholders from South East Europe. The seminar will bring together OSCE field operations and CSO representatives (National Youth Councils, NGO’s working in this field, think tanks etc.) as well as the OSCE Model Youth Ambassadors to discuss youth political participation. One of the main topics of the seminar will be to discuss the Youth Leadership Report and its recommendations. The agenda will include a panel discussion on Enhancing Youth Political Participation and a session on regional good practices. Additional key topics that will be addressed relate to:
- Youth and New media - are digital channels of participation making a difference
- Gender Mainstreaming of Youth Polices - is real change really happening
- Youth and Minorities – will the new forms of participation really be the game changer?
