Kosovo Verification Mission set up
When
25 October 1998 (All day)
The OSCE Permanent Council authorized the immediate deployment of the Kosovo Verification Mission (KVM), following a UN Security Council Resolution endorsing its establishment.
Under the decision, the KVM would be established for one year with the possibility of extensions. It called on OSCE States to contribute personnel and funding for the Mission and for the Secretary General to draft the budget for approval of the Permanent Council.
The KVM's tasks included the following:
- To verify compliance by all parties in Kosovo with UN Security Council Resolution 1199
- To maintain close liaison with FRY, Serbian and, as appropriate, other Kosovo authorities, political parties and other organizations in Kosovo
- To supervise elections in Kosovo to ensure their openness and fairness in accordance with regulations and procedures to be agreed
- To report and make recommendations to the OSCE Permanent Council, the UN Security Council and other organizations on areas covered by UN Security Council Resolution 1199
The KVM was later dissolved and was replaced by the Task Force for Kosovo on 8 June 1999, primarily tasked with preparing for re-deployment to Kosovo and continuing to assist the UN and other international organizations. The Task Force was dissolved on 1 July 1999 and replaced by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo.
