OSCE experts visited Gudauta base in Abkhazia, Georgia

TBILISI, 17 June 2002 - A team of four OSCE military experts on Saturday, 15 June 2002, conducted a two-hour visit to the Gudauta base in Abkhazia, Georgia.
Before departure to Gudauta, the team met with the Command of the CIS Peacekeeping Forces (CIS PKF). The OSCE experts stated that they would not conduct an inspection but a visit in preparation for later inspections. This was accepted by the CIS PKF Command.
In Gudauta, the Russian representatives of the CIS PKF briefed the members of the OSCE team on the present activities at the site and stated that heavy arms and equipment belonging to the Gudata base had been removed and only a logistics and support unit for the CIS PKF had been maintained. The OSCE experts then toured the compound and visited facilities.
The Command of the CIS PKF hosted the visit in a co-operative and forthcoming manner.
The invitation to come to the Gudauta base was conveyed on 11 June to Ambassador Jean-Michel Lacombe, Head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia by General Valery Yevnevich, Deputy Commander of the Russian Land Forces, who is also in charge of the Russian peacekeeping operations. The visit was conducted after consultations with Georgian authorities.
