OSCE media freedom representative outraged by killing of prominent journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta, urges thorough investigation
VIENNA, 16 October 2017 – Harlem Désir, OSCE media freedom representative, expressed immense shock over the death of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, and urged the Maltese authorities to carry out swift, transparent investigations into the case.
“I am deeply shocked and outraged by the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia. I send my deep condolences to her family and friends. She was a fierce, independent and brave investigative journalist, relentless in her efforts to uncover stories of public interest,” Désir said. “Not only her family, but the entire society must know who is responsible for her death.”
The prominent investigative journalist was a contributor to several media outlets including The Malta Independent, and a critical blogger. She died Monday afternoon in her car, right after leaving her home, when the rented vehicle exploded. Two weeks ago she filed a police report saying that she was being threatened.
In February, the Office of the Representative called on the authorities of Malta to protect the journalist, as well as critical journalism and free speech in the country (//www.osce.org/fom/299941).
The Representative notes that an investigation has been launched by the police, and that the authorities, including Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, have immediately and publicly condemned the attack. The Representative today spoke with the Prime Minister and will follow the investigation in close contact with the authorities.
“Silencing of journalists by killing is unacceptable. The authorities must uncover and prosecute those responsible,” Désir said.
