Skopje's new Amnesty Law wins praise from OSCE
LISBON 8 March 2002
LISBON, 8 March 2002 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Portuguese Foreign Minister, Jaime Gama, has welcomed the passage of an Amnesty Law by the Parliament in Skopje as an important confidence-building measure for the future of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
The adoption of this law represented a significant measure towards the full implementation of the principles agreed in Ohrid last year.
The OSCE Chairman-in-Office added: "This was an important step, as it will facilitate the police re-deployment process and increase confidence in the country. The adoption of the law also greatly contributes to the stabilization of life in a multi-ethnic society in accordance with democratic and tolerant values and clearly demonstrates the importance attached by parliamentary members to respecting the rule of law."
